PROGRAM OVERVIEW: STUDENTS' PERSPECTIVE

Typically, students become fully engaged in the PIRE-ECCI program during their second year of graduate education. First year graduate students will be distracted by the responsibilities of graduate classes, TA-ing and the stress of finding a research group. At this time they may begin attending PIRE-ECCI group meetings and participating in the group-rotation program to become familiar with the program and its participants. By their first summer they will be eligible to participate in the Bi-annual Workshop on Electron Chemistry and Catalysis in Dalian or Catalysis Summer Schools in Santa Barbara. Come the end of their second year in graduate school, they will have advanced to doctoral candidacy and gained valuable laboratory and/or computational skills. At this time they will be ready to fully benefit from the PIRE-ECCI experience.

Students typically enter into the intensive language program in the summer of their second year and depart on an extensive research visit (XRV) in the fall quarter of their third academic year. During their time at the chosen Chinese institute, they will receive regular language training in addition to their participation in joint laboratory studies. Upon returning from China, they will continue their thesis work under the auspices of the PIRE-ECCI and may qualify for a second XRV in year four of their graduate education at UCSB. By year five they should be writing their thesis.
