Grand Challenges of Electron Chemistry and Catalysis at Interfaces

Summer Workshop co-hosted by the PIRE-ECCI and ICMR
Santa Barbara, CA: August 10-15, 2008

Travel and Lodging

Santa Barbara is located on the central coast of California, about 100 miles north of Los Angeles. It is easily reached by car and by air. Lodging and most meals will be provided for all qualified non-local participants. There will also be several social events for all invited participants throughout the workshop.

Travel to Santa Barbara by Air

The most efficient way to travel to Santa Barbara from outside of the central coast is by air. We have an airport (SBA) located conveniently to UCSB and the surrounding area, usually accessed via a connection from the Los Angeles (LAX) or San Francisco (SFO) airports. Once you arrive at the airport, you may use the courtesy phone and call your place of lodging for a pick-up (BWSCI: 805-967-3200, Santa Ynez Residence Halls: 805-893-2626).

You may also fly into the Los Angeles airport (LAX), and use a bus service from there to Santa Barbara called the Santa Barbara Airbus. Tickets are about $40 each way and reservations may be made online in advance. The trip takes between 1 1/2 - 2 hours, and passengers should take the bus to the Goleta/Thornwood Drive stop. From here you can use the courtesy phone to call your place of lodging and arrange for a pick-up (BWSCI: 805-967-3200; Santa Ynez Residence Halls: 805-893-2626).

Travel to Santa Barbara by Car

Santa Barbara is easily reached from the north or south via US-highway 101. UCSB is at the northernmost part of Santa Barbara, in the city of Goleta. If you plan to arrive by car, please note that there is limited parking available on campus, and shuttles will be provided for all participants to and from the workshop venues.

Local Accommodations

Lodging has been reserved for all qualified non-local participants from August 10-16, 2008. If you plan on being in the area beyond the specified dates, you must arrange for your own lodging. Check-In date is Sunday, August 10, 2007. We will have a special welcome dinner for all participants on this evening, where you can submit your travel reimbursement paperwork, pick up the workshop materials, and meet your fellow participants.

Lodging for Invited Speakers

Lodging has been reserved for all invited speakers at the Best Western South Coast Inn, at 5620 Calle Real. Check-in time for the hotel is 3:00PM, and check out time is at noon. A continental berakfast is included with your stay at the hotel.

Meals

Continental breakfasts will be provided each morning at the first seminar location of the day for participants not staying at the Best Western, where breakfast is already provided.

Lunches, refreshments, and dinners will be provided at or near the conference site for all participants. Please contact Carrie Kuffel if you are a vegetarian or have any other dietary restrictions. We will do our best to accommodate you.

In the course of the one-week workshop, several social events and group dinners/meals will be planned to which all participants will be invited. We hope that everyone will quickly make new friends and acquaintances, to help foster an environment of interconnectivity in learning.
